James Anderson, president and CEO of Urban Science Applications, founded the company in 1977 while working as a civil engineer at Wayne State University's Center for Urban Studies. Today, Anderson has expanded the automotive and financial consulting company's operations to Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Australia, China, Mexico and Japan. The company employs 170 in Detroit and 400 globally.

Ted Green is CEO and founder of Greenview Data Inc., an information-technology company. Green's company has developed several IT software products including VEDIT, a product that computer programmers can use to edit any computer file; and an anti-spam service called SpamStopsHere.

James Toeniskoetter

James Toeniskoetter is the president and COO Hirotec America, an automotive engineering and manufacturing company. Toeniskoetter developed several energy-efficient inventions including electromagnetic pulse technology that reduces the weight of automobiles and the E3 Hemming Press, a low-cost alternative to traditional hydraulic presses. The name E3 stands for environment, efficient and electric. The press also won an Automotive News Pace Award for innovation.

Scott Goemmel is co-founder and executive vice president for PMV Technologies, an information-technology services company. Goemmel is responsible for business strategy and growth, and new business acquisitions.

Dave Biskner, business-development manager for Synergy Plus Solutions Inc., has been chairman of Automation Alley's technology business committee for two years. Earlier this year, Biskner led a popular business-to-business series about the benefits of being an Alley member.

Karen Johnson
Macomb Intermediate School
Clinton Township

Karen Johnson, career and technical education specialist for the Macomb Intermediate School District in Clinton Township, developed a program called “Best Dressed” for Macomb schools. The three-day program, held every spring semester, has students sell donated formal wear. The students operate the “Best Dressed Shop” as a merchandise and marketing school project, with the students making a small profit from each sale.

Microheat Inc.
Farmington Hills

Microheat Inc. is the tier-one auto supplier that developed HotShot, a windshield washer cleaning and de-icing system which uses heated fluid to remove ice, dead bugs and bird droppings. The product, introduced in 2002, contains a microprocessor that sprays the fluid at a specific temperature in precise intervals to clear windshields, washer nozzles, headlamps, radar sensors and rear windows.

Netlink Software Group
Madison Heights

Netlink Software Group is an information-technology and business-process software provider. Netlink works with companies such as General Motors Corp., Starbucks Corp., Penske Auto Group, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The company, employing 1,000 globally, opened its headquarters in Madison Heights this past July and plans to bring 473 new tech jobs to Southeast Michigan.

Compact Power Inc.

Compact Power Inc. designs and develops lithium-ion batteries for North American hybrid-electric vehicles. The company, employing 23, reached a contract agreement with General Motors Corp. to develop batteries for the Chevrolet Volt. The company also received two development contracts from the U.S. Advance Battery Consortium.

ElectroJet Inc.
Brighton

ElectroJet Inc. is an engineering design firm that specializes in automotive electronic fuel injection. The company's facility includes an electronics lab, a machine shop, fabrication area, workbenches, office space, and floor space for vehicle modifications and prototype assembly. ElectroJet also has two acres of land for field testing products.

Bloomfield Hills Schools
Bloomfield Township

The design and technology curriculum at Bloomfield Hills High School aims to integrate students' math and science skills. The high school program includes two drafting classes in engineering and architecture. Students are introduced to computer codes and they create computer-aided drawings. Students also research alternative-energy sources such as solar, electric, and hydrogen fuel cells.

Oakland University-Beaumont Graduate Program of Nurse Anesthesia
Rochester

The Oakland University-Beaumont Graduate Program of Nurse Anesthesia started in 1991 to address the shortage of nurses in southeast Michigan. The 28-month, 55-credit hour, full-time program offers a master of science degree in nursing. The program includes courses in nursing, biology and chemistry, and specialty courses in nurse anesthesia. The program also includes a clinical internship.

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation offers manufacturing-related K-12 educational programs designed to stimulate an early interest in math, science, engineering, technology and manufacturing. Summer programs include camps and the academy programs held at the University of Detroit Mercy.

Engineering Society of Detroit

The Southfield-based Engineering Society of Detroit provides support for the next generation of Detroit area scientists, engineers and allied professionals. The society offers programs such as student internships, a career center, and a speaker's bureau that matches engineering experts with school students.
